Causes of multiple sclerosis on World Multiple Sclerosis Day

The world celebrates the 30th of May every year as the International Day of Multiple Sclerosis, to raise awareness of this disease; With the aim of removing social barriers that make people with this disease feel lonely and socially isolated.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of possible symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance. Sometimes a significant disability, although sometimes it may be mild.

In many cases, the symptoms can be treated, as life expectancy is slightly reduced for people with MS.

Multiple sclerosis is most commonly diagnosed in people in their twenties, thirties and forties, although it can develop at any age, and it is 2 to 3 times more common in women than in men.

In the following lines, we review together the symptoms and causes of multiple sclerosis:

Multiple sclerosis causes

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that appears when something goes wrong with the immune system and mistakenly attacks a healthy part of the body, the brain or spinal cord of the nervous system.

In MS, the immune system attacks the layer that surrounds and protects nerves called the myelin sheath, damaging and scarring the sheath and possibly the underlying nerves, which means that messages traveling along the nerves are slowed or disrupted.

It's not clear exactly what causes the immune system to act in this way, but most experts believe that there is a combination of genetic and environmental factors that lead to this.
